ATWOOD’S MACHINE

Product code: PHY-000011

Atwood's Machine is a classic mechanics apparatus designed to demonstrate Newton's laws of motion, acceleration, force and the relationship between mass and motion. It consists of a rigid support rod with low-friction pulleys, a connecting cord and two sets of slotted weights for balanced and unbalanced mass experiments.

Description

The Atwood's Machine is a precision educational apparatus used for studying the fundamental principles of Newtonian mechanics. It provides a simple arrangement for investigating the relationship between applied force, mass and acceleration.

The apparatus consists of a vertical support rod with a sturdy mounting arrangement and a pulley assembly mounted at the top. A lightweight cord passes over the pulleys, with a mass hanger and slotted weights suspended at each end. The masses can be arranged in equal or unequal combinations to demonstrate equilibrium and accelerated motion.

With equal masses on both sides, the system can be used to demonstrate balanced forces and equilibrium. By adding a small additional mass to one side, students can observe the resulting acceleration and investigate the relationship between net force, total mass and acceleration.
